Interpretation:
The definitions of conductor, insulator, semiconducting elements, donor impurities, acceptor impurities, n-type semiconductors, p-type semiconductors are to be described.
Concept introduction:
On the basis of extent of movable free electrons in the material, these materials are classified into conductors, insulators, or semiconductors.
The materialsthat conduct electricity are called conductors.
The materialsthat do not conduct electricity are called insulators.
The material that has conductivity between insulators and conductors are semi-conductors.
The elementsthat, when added to a semiconductor, provide unbound or free electrons to the semiconductor that may serve as current carriers are termed as donor impurities.
The materialsthat, when added to a semiconductor, can form p-type region by creating positive charges or holes are termed as acceptor impurities.
The material in which holes are the majority carriers and electrons are the minority carriers is called p-type semiconductors.
The material in which electrons are the majority carriers and holes are the minority carriers is called n-type semiconductors.
Semiconductors are further classified as n-type and p-type semiconductors.
