Chapter 23, Problem 1P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Calculate the available metabolic water from fatty acid oxidation for camel.

Introduction:

Water is released as a product in fatty acid oxidation (beta oxidation reactions). Therefore, beta oxidation provides a mean of water production for camels. Hump of the camel store a large amount of fatty acids and oxidizes releasing water.

Explanation of Solution

If the all the triglycerides are formed by palmitic acid, the palmitic acid percentage in triglycerides,

Palmetic acid %=3×Molecularweight of palmetic acidMolecularweight of triglyceride×100 %

Triglyceride is formed by one glycerol molecule with three palmetic acid molecules with the exclusion of three water molecules.

  Palmetic acid %=3× 256 gmol -13×MWt of palmetic acid+Molecular Weight of glycerol-3×MW of water×100%Palmetic acid %=3× 256 gmol -13× 256 gmol -1 +92 gmol -1-3× 18 gmol -1×100%Palmetic acid %=95 %30 pounds of triglycerides = 30 lb1 g×453.6 g = 13608 g

Where MW is molecular weight.

  Palmetic acid content = 13608 g×95% = 12928 g

  Palmetic acid moles = 12928 g256 gmol-1=50.5 mol

Beta oxidation of one mole of palmitate produces 130 moles of water.

Therefore, the water moles produced in beta oxidation in this case = 50.5 mol×130=6565 moles

Produced water weight = =6565 mol×18 gmol-1=118170 g

Produced water volume = =118170 g1000 g/L=118.17 L
