Step 1: The alkyl groups that are connected to the nitrogen atom have to be identified.
Step 2: Determine whether the compound should be named as alkyl amine or as an alkanamine. If the alkyl groups are simple, then the corresponding amine is named as alkylamine whereas if the alkyl groups are complex, then the corresponding amine is named as alkanamine.
Step 3: If the compound is named as alkanamine then the more complex group has to be chosen as the parent.
Step 4: The parent chain is numbered starting from the side that is closer to the amine group.
Step 5: Then the locants, name and configuration have to be assigned.
