Introduction:
Respiration is a process of movement of air in and out of the lungs to facilitate the exchange of gases with the cells internally through blood. Total lung capacity is the total amount of air that can be filled in the lungs. For an adult the normal total lung capacity is 6 liters of air. The amount of air that is inhaled, exhaled and stored in the lungs for a given period is respiratory volume. Respiratory volume includes tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. The amount of air inhaled with maximum effort than normal in excess of the tidal volume is inspiratory reserve volume. The amount of air exhaled with maximal effort more than the tidal volume is expiratory reserve volume. The normal value of inspiratory reserve volume is 3000 mL and that of expiratory reserve volume is 1200 mL. Residual volume is the amount of volume that remains in the lungs even after maximal expiration and cannot be exhaled voluntarily. The normal value of residual volume is 1300 mL.
