The respiratory system is an organ system that is involved in respiration or breathing. The respiratory system involves a well-organized central coordinating system that acts on multiple respiratory muscles to produce breathing. The medulla and pons are primarily involved in the respiration and its rhythmic patterns. Breathing can occur voluntarily or involuntarily. The automatic, involuntary respiratory cycle is controlled by the medulla oblongata and pons. The voluntary respiration is controlled by the cerebellum.
