Microbes are essential for the proper functioning of biogeochemical cycles. There are predominantly six compounds which are recycled and used by organisms: carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. The elemental composition of microbes depends largely on the species and conditions available for their growth.
