Concept explainers
To answer:
As you have probably noticed, colds occur more frequently in the fall and winter. One explanation is that more people are crowded together in buildings when school starts and the weather cools. Design an experiment or epidemiological survey to test the hypothesis that crowded conditions explain the prevalence of colds in the fall and winter.
Introduction:
The common cold occurs in humans and most of the individuals are infected with the common cold at least two times per year. The rhinoviruses are the most common infection in the upper respiratory system. The common cold infects mostly in the nose, but it also causes infection in sinuses, larynx, and throat. The common symptoms include a sore throat, sneezing, running nose, headache, coughing, and fever.

EBK MICROBIOLOGY:W/DISEASES BY BODY...-
- Enumerate and briefly explain the steps in pathogenesis of common cold with this format: Entry of the pathogen into the body > Attachment of the pathogen to some tissue(s) within the body > Multiplication of the pathogen > Invasion or spread of the pathogen > Evasion of host defenses > Damage to host tissue(s)arrow_forwardDescribe the pathogen that causes “The Flu”. What happens you get the flu and how did you most likely acquire it. Explain how the causal pathogen is different from many other pathogens in terms of why it can cause epidemics and pandemics and why you need an annual vaccine. Define the terms antigenic shift and antigenic drift and explain how they are related to this disease.arrow_forwardSwaziland is a small country relative to many other nations and the age distribution has more young people than old people. Thus, the epidemiologists who collected and analyzed the data want to know how these rates compare to other countries. Before making any comparisons, the epidemiologists first perform age adjustment. Why is it important to make age adjustment before comparing the data?arrow_forward

To calculate the risk (cumulative incidence) of illness among the students, which denominator should be used? Number of susceptible students at the end of the period (i.e., June) Number of susceptible students at the midpoint of the period (late October/early November) Number of susceptible students at the beginning of the period (i.e., September) Average number of susceptible students from September through Decemberarrow_forwardWhat is the second most common cause of death in Western countries ?arrow_forward
- If a disease X has a duration of 15 years and a low incidence (5 per 100,000 person-years). If another disease Y has a duration of 5 years and a low and low incidence (5 per 100,000 person years). If we compare disease X and Disease Y in the same population, we would expect: a) Better cure b) lower prevalence c) higher prevalence d) Higher incidence e) shorter durationarrow_forwardWhy is it helpful for scientists to use models to simulate the spread of a communicable disease?arrow_forwardEach year, non-communicable diseases claim 41 million lives: That’s about 70 per cent of all global deaths. Non-communicable diseases, also known as chronic diseases, disproportionately affect people in low- and middle-income countries. While non-communicable diseases tend to manifest in adulthood, many have their origins in behaviors adopted during childhood and adolescence. Tobacco use, a lack of physical activity, unhealthy diets and excess drinking of alcohol all increase the risk of dying from a non-communicable disease. Out an outbreak investigation for communicable diseases is key in disease prevention. Examine the above statement using relevant examplesarrow_forward
