Concept introduction:
The molecules thathave the same molecular formula but a different arrangement of atoms in their structure are known as isomers.
The isomers that occur when rotation is restricted in a molecule are known as geometric isomers. These are of two types: cis and trans.
If two compounds are of the same kind andhave the same number of atoms and bonds, but always form nonsuperimposable mirror images, they are said to be optical isomers. A moleculethatexists as an optical isomer isalways chiral.
