This is a type of aromatic halogenation reaction. In this reaction Bromine, Br2, does not react with benzene under normal conditions, but bromination produces bromobenzene in the presence of Fe or FeBr3 where FeBr3 acts as a Lewis acid. The product of an aromatic halogenation, an aryl halide, could be the desired target in the synthesis. An aryl halide could be a useful synthetic intermediate such as in the production of a Grignard reagent.
