Concept introduction: UCP1 or uncoupling protein, earlier named as thermogenin, is an uncoupling protein that is found in the mitochondria of brown adipose tissue. This uncoupling protein is used to generate heat by non-shivering thermogenesis. The methods to deliver UCP1 to cells by gene transfer therapy or the methods of its upregulation play an important role in the research for the treatment of obesity.
