Chapter 21.6, Problem 20P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The preparations of given compounds by the appropriate β- di carbonyl compounds and alkyl halides with the help of retrosynthetic analysis is to be written.

Concept introduction:

A molecule that consists of a ketone group on the β- carbon atom of an ester is generally known as β- keto ester. It contains an active methylene group between two carbonyl groups in its structure. Diethyl malonate and ethyl acetoacetate are some examples of β- keto esters.

These β- keto esters undergo alkylation. The resulting alkylated β- keto ester results in the formation of ketone and carboxylic acids after hydrolysis followed by decarboxylation.

Retrosynthesis is used to identify the reactants. It involves the breaking of the target molecule into starting materials.
