Concept introduction:
A compound that consists of a central metal ion or atom with a surrounding group of molecules or ions by covalent bonds is referred to as a coordination compound.
Coordination number is referred to as the number of atoms, molecules or ions that connects to the central atom or ion in a coordination complex.
Oxidation state is the degree of oxidation in a chemical compound referred to as the oxidation state.
The geometry of a molecule is determined through Valence-Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory. The theory states that the molecule will achieve a geometry that minimizes the repulsion between electrons in the valence shell of the atom.

- Four different octahedral chromium coordination compounds exist that all have the same oxidation state for chromium and have H2O and Cl as the ligands and counterions. When 1 mole of each of the four compounds is dissolved in water, how many moles of silver chloride will precipitate upon addition of excess AgNO3?arrow_forwardPlatinum(II) forms many complexes, among them those with the following ligands. Give the formula and charge of each complex. (a) two ammonia molecules and one oxalate ion (C2O42-) (b) two ammonia molecules, one thiocyanate ion (SCN-), and one bromide ion (c) one ethylenediamine molecule and two nitrite ionsarrow_forwardAn aqueous solution of [Rh(C2O4)3]3− is yellow. Predict the approximate wavelength and predominant color of light absorbed by the complex.arrow_forward
- For each d electron configuration, state the number of unpaired electrons expected in octahedral complexes. Give an example complex for each case. (Two answers are possible for some of these cases.) (a) d2 (b) d4 (c) d6 (d) d8arrow_forwardWhat is the coordination number of the central metal atom in the following complexes? (a) [Fe(H2O)63+] (b) [Pt(NH3)Br3] (c) [V(en)Cl42] (d) [Au(CN)2+]arrow_forward
