Chapter 20, Problem 26E
Summary Introduction
To explain: The reason why inhibiting the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase does not affect a person’s body mass.
Concept introduction: Acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) is a biotin-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the irreversible carboxylation of acetyl CoA to produce malonyl CoA with the help of its two catalytic activities, biotin carboxylase and carboxyltransferase. Inhibition of the enzyme Acetyl-CoA carboxylase is proposed as a treatment for obesity. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase enzyme inhibits the transfer of fatty acyl group to the mitochondria and thereby inhibiting the β-oxidation of fatty acids in the mitochondria.
