Chapter 20, Problem 20.18QAP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The ions which results in the four peaks having larger mass-to-charge ratios than the M+ peak in given should be identified.

Concept introduction:

Mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical technique which is used to elucidate structure of compounds, quantify materials, identify unknown compounds etc. In mass spectrophotometer the molecule is ionized by giving it a positive charge by removing an electron or by adding a proton. The molecule may break into several positively charged fragments according to the ionization method used. Then in a mass analyzer these cationic molecular fragments are separated based on their mass and detected by the detector. Only positively charged molecular fragments are detected by the detector.

A student prepared several solutions of Molecule Bright, each at a different concentration.  The absorbance of each solution was measured at 405 nm with a path length of 0.730 cm.  The student then plotted the absorbance of each sample vs. its concentration (in mM), and found a best-fit line of y = 3.726x + 0.828.  Calculate the molar absorptivity of the Molecule Bright (in M-1 cm-1).
Assign the peaks and identify what the structure is.
