Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The difference between the gaseous and the desorption sources and their advantages is to be stated.
Concept introduction:
Ion source is a device that is used to create ions of atoms and the molecules. The ion sources are of two types. These are gaseous sources and the desorption sources. These sources are used to produce ions for spectrometers, particle accelerators and ion engines.

Answer to Problem 20.1QAP
The difference between the gaseous and the desorption sources is that gaseous sources first vaporize the sample and then form ions whereas desorption sources directly produce the ions of the sample.
Advantage of gaseous sources is that they ionize the thermally stable compounds. On the other hand, desorption sources ionize thermally unstable compounds.
Explanation of Solution
In the gaseous sources, the sample first gets vaporized and then gets ionized and in desorption sources, the sample which is solid or liquid, gets directly converted into the gaseous ions.
The advantages of the gaseous and the desorption sources are as follows.
- Gaseous sources: These sources are used to ionize the compounds which are thermally stable. These sources are much simple and fast.
- Desorption sources: These sources are used to ionize the compounds which are non-volatile and thermally unstable.
