Summary Introduction
The central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system are considered as the two important branches of the nervous system. The CNS consists of the spinal cord and brain, whereas the PNS contains autonomic (ANS) and somatic nervous system (SNS). The ANS is further divided into the sympathetic or adrenergic and parasympathetic or cholinergic. The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) consists of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter that binds to the cholinergic receptor and mediates the nerve impulses to the effector cells. The cholinergic receptor consists of two types, namely the nicotinic receptor and muscarinic receptors. The nicotinic receptor is located at ganglia between SNS and PNS and muscarinic receptors that are located in the effector's organs such as cardiac, smooth muscles, and glands.
