Concept explainers
The Starship Enterprise returns from warp drive to ordinary space with a forward speed of 50 km/s. To the crew’s great surprise, a Klingon ship is 100 km directly ahead, traveling in the same direction at a mere 20 km/s. Without evasive action, the Enterprise will overtake and collide with the Klingons in just slightly over 3.0 s. The Enterprise’s computers react instantly to brake the ship. What magnitude acceleration does the Enterprise need to just barely avoid a collision with the Klingon ship? Assume the acceleration is constant.
Hint: Draw a position-versus-time graph showing the motions of both the Enterprise and the Klingon ship. Let x0= 0 km be the location of the Enterprise as it returns from warp drive. How do you show graphically the situation in which the collision is “barely avoided”? Once you decide what it looks like graphically, express that situation mathematically.

- A red train traveling at 20 m/s and a green train traveling at 40 m/s are headed toward one another along a straight, level track. When they are 950 m apart, each engineer sees the other's train and applies the breaks. The breaks decelerates each train at the rate of 1 m/s˄2. What is the speed (in m/s) of the green train at impact?arrow_forwardAs a science project, you drop a watermelon off the top of the Empire State Building, 320 m above the sidewalk. It so happens that Superman flies by at the instant you release the watermelon. Superman is headed straight down with a speed of 37.0 m/sm/s.How fast is the watermelon going when it passes Superman?arrow_forwardOK, this is the last time for one of these crazy adventures. THIS time, though, there is a window in the floor, and you can see that you re in a rocket which has just taken off from the surface an alien planet. By taking careful measurements out that window you determine that the rocket is accelerating upward at 8.14 m/s^2. When you drop a ball from a height of 2.15 m, it hits the floor 0.200 s later. What is the value of g for the alien world below you?arrow_forward
- Two cars are moving towards an intersection. One car is 150 meters north of the intersection and moving towards the intersection at 20 m/s, while the other is 180 meters west of the intersection and moving towards the intersection at 16 m/s. How rapidly are the cars approaching each other 4 seconds later?arrow_forwardWhile standing at the edge of the roof of a building, a man throws a stone upward with an initial speed of 7.27m/s. The stone subsequently falls to the ground, which is 13.9 m below the point where the stone leaves his hand. At what speed does the stone impact the ground? Ignore air resistance and use epsilon = 9.81 m / s ^ 2 for the acceleration due to gravity What is the impact speed in m/s? How much time is the stone in the air? Elapsed timearrow_forwardA spacecraft is traveling with a velocity of v0x = 5010 m/s along the +x direction. Two engines are turned on for a time of 915 s. One engine gives the spacecraft an acceleration in the +x direction of ax = 2.96 m/s2, while the other gives it an acceleration in the +ydirection of ay = 8.08 m/s2. At the end of the firing, what is a) vx and b) vy?arrow_forward
- Moving sidewalks are installed every other 50 meters along the entire stretch of an airport walkway. These sidewalks move at a constant speed of 1 m/s. A lady passenger takes one of the sidewalks to go from one point to the next. If the passenger decides to go back using the same sidewalk at 1 m/s, how long will it take to reach her point of origin?arrow_forwardAs a science project, you drop a watermelon off the top of the Empire State Building, 320 m above the sidewalk. It so happens that Superman flies by at the instant you release the watermelon. Superman is headed straight down with a speed of 30.0 m/s . How fast is the watermelon going when it passes Superman?arrow_forwardTwo locomotives 70 kilometers apart are travelling on the same track towards each other, Engine A moves at 22 kilometers per hour east and engine B moves at 13 kilometersper hour west. At the instant both trains begin moving, an annoying mutant fly beginsflying from engine A towards engine B at 33 kilometers per hour . The instant it touchesB, it turns around and flies back. It goes on this way until the two locomotives collideand the mutant fly is finally squashed. So, before its untimely demise, a) what is the total distance the fly flew? b) the time it took till it was eliminated and c) the average velocity of the fly? how can i find this pleasearrow_forward
- You're an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, examining a subway accident in which a train going at 90 km/hkm/h collided with a slower train traveling in the same direction at 24 km/hkm/h . Your job is to determine the relative speed of the collision, to help establish new crash standards. The faster train's "black box" shows that it began negatively accelerating at 2.1 m/s2m/s2 when it was 52 mm from the slower train, while the slower train continued at constant speed. What do you report ?arrow_forwardTo help travelers get around the airport, a shuttle was built between two terminals. Starting from rest, the shuttle accelerates at 0.447 m/s2 for 37.1 s, cruises at this constent velocity for 62.5 s, and then deaccelerates at -0.275 m/s2 until it comes to a stop. What is the distance between the terminals?arrow_forwardDennis is sitting in the back of a station wagon traveling 75.0 mph on the highway. He fires a pebble from his slingshot at 63.0 mph to the front of the car. What is the speed of the pebble, in mph, relative to the road?arrow_forward
