Chapter 2, Problem 6E
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The three units of length are to be listed, and one example of each unit is to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Distances are measured in length. The S.I unit of length is meter. Length is a measure of one dimension. There are various units of length, such as, meter (m), kilometer (km), foot (ft), millimeter (mm), and centimeters (cm).

An object floats in water if it less dense than water. In other words if the volume of the material weighs less than the same volume of water (for example a piece of plastic). An object sinks in water if it is more dense than water (for example a piece of steel). The same principle applies for objects surrounded by air. Objects that are less dense than air, i.e., weigh less than the same volume of air, will float upward. For example, a helium-filled balloon floats upward because the helium inside the balloon weighs less than the same volume of air, since helium molecules weigh less than the nitrogen and oxygen that make up most of our atmosphere. Objects that are more dense than air, like humans, sink to the bottom of the atmosphere.
Suppose we put some air in a sealed, flexible container like a balloon. No air can enter or leave the container, but since the container is flexible, it can easily change its size or volume. At first, the air temperature, air number density, and air…
A particular plot of distance traveled against time elapsed is found to be a straight line. After an elapsed time of 1.5 hours, the distance traveled was 75 miles, and after an elapsed time of 3.0 hours, the distance traveled was 150miles. Calculate the slope of the plot of distance against time, and give its units.
In an attempt to determine the velocity of a person on a bicycle, an observer uses a stopwatch and fi nds the length of time it takes to cover 25 “squares” on a sidewalk. The bicycle takes 4.82 seconds to travel this far. A measurement of one of the squares shows that it is 1.13 m long. What velocity, in m/s, should the observer report?
