A fuel tanker or railroad tanker car has been involved in an accident beneath a bridge or highway overpass, resulting in an intense heat fire. Concern has been expressed that the exposure to extreme elevated temperature has weakened the steel structure of the bridge or overpass. Has the steel been sufficiently weakened that the bridge or overpass should be closed or the flow of traffic restricted? Describe several ways in which hardness tests could be conducted (or used in a modified form) to provide a quick, on�site, determination of the current strength of the steel.
