BIO Blackout? A jet fighter pilot wishes to accelerate from rest at a constant acceleration of 5g to reach Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound) as quickly as possible. Experimental tests reveal that he will black out if this acceleration lasts for more than 5.0 s. Use 331 m/s for the speed of sound, (a) Will the period of acceleration last long enough to cause him to black out? (b) What is the greatest speed he can reach with an acceleration of 5g before he blacks out?

- ACTIVITY 11 1. Two cars, A and B have speed of 25 kph and 40 kph in constant speed respectively. If they start from the same point and move in opposite directions, how far will they be each other in one and half hours? dtotal da Va = 25 kph Vb = 4 0 kph t = 1.5 h 2. - A supersonic jet flying at 20 m/s is accelerated uniformly at a rate of 23.1 m/s² for 19 seconds. (a) What is the jet's final velocity? (b) The speed of sound is 331 m/s in air. How many times the speed of sound is the jets final speed? A new type of gun is being developed by engineers. The gun will be used to launch a rocket as if they were bullets. One of the guns can give a small object a velocity of 5 km/s moving it through only 10 cm. a. What acceleration does the gun give this object? meidong a b. He is 55 m. from the intersection when he applies the brakes after 1.5 second reaction time. If the car can decelerates at a rate of 3.2 m/s2, at what velocity will he be moving when he reaches the intersection? If the yellow light is 5 seconds long, where will the man be when the light turns red? Assuming he will continue through at the speed found in part when the light changes to red. - Nuclear explosions cause a blast wave, a high-pressure shock wave generated by the heat from the fireball. These shock waves can travel in air at an average speed of 738 mph. (1 mile = 1609 meters). If a nuclear weapon in detonated in Pittsburgh, how far will the blast wave have traveled from the location of detonation 2.39 s after the explosion? (Give your answer in meters)arrow_forwardArchibald, an aging geezer, is out bicycling one fine afternoon, reliving his glorious youth and oblivious to the world around him. As he approaches a busy intersection, a police officer directing traffic blows his whistle to get Archie’s attention so he’ll slow down and stop. But Archie doesn’t stop; he just speeds right through the intersection as if the traffic cop wasn’t even there. The cop radios one of his colleagues and gets her to stop the old geezer. She gives him a traffic citation for failing to heed the command of a police officer directing traffic. When the case gets to traffic court, Archie explains to the judge that he didn’t hear the officer’s whistle because he is going deaf and cannot hear frequencies above 3000 Hz. The traffic cop informs the judge that his standard issue police whistle emits a frequency of 2100 Hz and he has a certificate to prove it. Thinking quickly (at least for an old geezer) Archie says that it may be true that the police whistle emits a sound…arrow_forwardThere are four traffic lights on a stretch of road and the distance between each traffic light is 300 m. There is a 10-s lag time between successive green lights: The second light turns green 10 s after the first light turns green, the third light turns green 10 s after the second light does (and, thus, 20 s after the first light turns green), and so on. Each light stays green for 15 s. Having watched this sequence for some time, you understand that you can drive through the stretch of road at a range of constant speeds. You drive through the first light right when it turned green. What is the fastest speed that you can drive through the stretch of road without running any red lights? What is the slowest speed?arrow_forward
- A large volcanic eruption triggers a tsunami. At a seismic station 210 km away, the instruments record that the time difference between the arrival of the tidal wave and the arrival of the sound of the explosion is 7.80 min. Assume the tsunami travels at 700 km/h. What is the ratio of the speed (?tsunami) of the tsunami to the speed (?sound) of the sound of the explosion?arrow_forwardSuppose the caravan of 10 cars begins immediately in front of the first toll booth, travels 20 km to a second toll booth, then another 40 km to a third toll booth, and finally stops immediately after the third tool booth. Thus, they travel a total of 60 km. What is the total end-to-end delay? Where is the last car in the caravan after one hour? Your answer must include a distance/specific location, and not only a relative direction.arrow_forwardIn World War II, there were several reported cases of airmen who jumped from their flaming airplanes with no parachute to escape certain death. Some fell about 20,000 feet (6000 m), and some of them survived, with few life- threatening injuries. For these lucky pilots, the tree branches and snow drifts on the ground allowed their deceleration to be relatively small. If we assume that a pilot's speed upon impact was 123 mph (54 m/s), then what was his deceleration? Assume that the trees and snow stopped him over a distance of 3.0 m.arrow_forward
