Concept explainers
Interpretation: The process of filtration to separate a mixture into its components needs to be explained with an example.
Concept introduction: Practically all of the matter in environment consists of mixtures of different substance. For example, soil; it has many forms of components, air; it has mixture of many gases, etc.
Answer to Problem 20A
An example of filtration to separate a mixture into its components is a mixture of salt & sand.
Explanation of Solution
Filtration is a process of separation of solid from a fluid (or liquid) by passing the fluid (or liquid) through any filtering/ cleaning medium, on which the solid materials are deposited.
For example, take a mixture of salt & sand. Salt is soluble in water and sand is notsoluble in water. Now, add the mixture to water and stir to dissolve the salt. After doing this, filtered out the sand. The solution of salt passes through the filter, while the sand remains in the filter. The water will be evaporating by leaving the salt.
The process of filtration is used to separate a mixture into its components.
