Answer to Problem 1A

Two characteristic properties are solubility and reactivity.

Explanation of Solution

Each depending upon its nature, dissolves, slightly dissolves or do not dissolves in various solvent. The solubility can be expressed in gramlitre or mollitre . Each matter has different solubility values in different solvents by which one can identify the matter.

Matter is made up of atoms. Each atom has unique electronic configuration. Atoms through various types of bonds combine to form matter. Hence, each matter has unique ability to react with water, acids, bases, and oxygen etc. Reactivity will depends on the type atoms, bonds and intermolecular forces involved.

Conclusion

Thus, the two characteristic properties are solubility and reactivity.
