Population Dynamics
In 1991, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed logging restrictions on nearly 12 million acres of Pacific Northwest forest to help save the endangered northern spotted owl. This decision caused considerable controversy between the logging industry and environmentalists.
Mathematical ecologists created a mathematical model to analyze the population dynamics of the spotted owl. They divided the female owl population into three categories: juvenile (up to 1 year old), subadult (1 to 2 years old), and adult (over 2 years old). Suppose that in a certain region there are currently 2950 female spotted owls made up of 650 juveniles, 200 subadults, and 2100 adults. The ecologists used matrices to project the changes in the population from year to year. The original numbers can be displayed in the column matrix
The populations after one year are given by the column matrix
The subscript 1 tells us that the matrix gives the population after one year. The names of the matrices for subsequent years will have subscripts 2, 3, 4, etc.
How many subadult females are there after one year?

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardDefine mathematical models.arrow_forwardHospital Beds. The number of hospital beds available in community hospitals is decreasing. Through advancement in care and technology, hospitals are getting more efficient. However, the aging and increasingly obese and diabetic population intensifies the need. The American Hospital Association Annual Survey, published by the American Hospital Association (AHA), gave the number of hospital beds available per 1000 people for each of the 50 states plus the District of Columbia for 2010. Following is a stem-and-leaf diagram of the data. The stems represent units and the leaves tenths (e.g., the first entry is 1.7). How many states (including the District of Columbia) had a. at least three but less than four hospital beds per 1000 people available? b. at least four and a half hospital beds per 1000 people available?arrow_forward
- The Lawson Fabric Mill Produces five different fabrics. Each fabric can be woven on one or more of the mill’s 36 looms. The sales department’s forecast of demand for the next month is shown in below Table 1, along with data on the selling price per yard, variable cost per yard, and purchase price per yard. The mill operates 24 hours a day and is scheduled for 30 days during the coming month. The mill has two types of looms: draw and regular. The draw looms are more versatile and can be used for all five fabrics. The regular looms can produce only three of the fabrics. The mill has a total of 36 looms: 8 are draw and 28 are regular. The rate of production for each fabric on each type of loom is given in below Table 2. The time required to change over from producing one fabric to another is negligible and does not have to be considered. The Lawson Fabric Mill satisfies all demand with either its own fabric or fabric purchased from another mill. Fabrics that cannot be woven at the…arrow_forwardPart 2: The owner of a pet store is trying to decide whether to discontinue selling specialty clothes for pets. She suspects that only 4% of the customers buy specialty clothes for their pets and thinks that she might be able to replace the clothes with more interesting and profitable items on the shelves. Before making a final decision she decides to keep track of the total number of customers for a day, and whether they purchase specialty clothes for their pet. Assuming the pet store owner is correct in thinking that only 4% of her customers purchase specialty clothes for their pets, how many customers should she expect before someone buys a garment for their pet? l. 2. What is the probability that she does not sell a gament until the 7th customer? Show work. What is the probability that exactly 3 of the first 10 customers buy specialty clothes for their pet? You have one observation per county, corresponding to the total number of species observed there during the Christmas Bird Count (a national bird count organized mainly by volunteers every year on Christmas). Your predictor variables are: population, percent forested habitat, number of highways that cross the county. What kind of model do you use to analyze these data? For the above model, you think there may be a non-linear effect of forest habitat based on the number of highways that cross the county, as this may cause the habitat to be more fragmented. You do not think there are any other non-linear effects. Assume "county" is a variable for which county the data comes from Assume "highways" is the number of highways in the county Assume "forest" is the percent of forested habitat Assume "population" is the population of the county Group of answer choices # species ~ county + highways *…arrow_forward
- You get a job as the manager of a popular ice cream store in your hometown. One of your first concerns is determining how much ice cream you should stock to meet the demands of your customers. You suspect that the number of customers buying ice cream probably depends on several factors. In looking through company files, you discover that the former manager collected considerable data. Last summer, a typical week produced the following data: Day Temperature (degrees Fahrenheit) Number of Transactions Gross Receipts (in dollars) Monday 78 238 3014 Tuesday 73 194 2842 Wednesday 70 172 2141 Thursday 75 185 2235 Friday 83 270 4505 Saturday 89 320 5021 Sunday 94 280 4442 On the graph below, the temperature is graphed on the x axis and the number of transactions is graphed on the y axis.
