Concept introduction: Natural selection is an important mechanisms of evolution in which the species will be better adapted to their surroundings. The alleles that are responsible for the death of an individual are called lethal alleles. They are generally due to the effect of gene mutations which are necessary for the growth and development. Depending upon the genes involved, lethal alleles can be dominant, recessive or conditional. Natural selection can eliminate the imperfect genes present in homozygous individuals by death but they cannot eliminate the imperfect genes present in heterozygous individuals as they do not have an influence in its phenotype.
