In the catalytic hydrogenation reaction, alkenes can be reduced. It can also take place selectively if two or more different functional groups appear in a particular molecule; it often reduces just one of them. Less sterically hindered multiple bonds are more favored than sterically hindered ones. Compounds with less sterically hindered double bonds are absorbed more easily on the surface of the metal catalyst.
