Summary Introduction

Introduction:

The Ames test was invented by Bruce Ames in the 1970s in order to check the mutagenicity of any substance, that is, how much it can mutate the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The test uses a strain of Salmonella, which is incapable of synthesizing histidine on its own. The test basically looks at the ability of a substance to create a mutation, such that the strain starts producing its own histidine.
