Introduction:
The two fundamental physical properties of blood are its viscosity and osmolarity. Both are tightly regulated by homeostasis as survival measures. Blood viscosity determines flow through blood vessels. When blood viscosity rises, even thrice higher than normal as seen in primary polycythemia, flow in blood vessels gets sluggish and capillaries are plugged due to the highly viscous fluid. This decreases circulation and overloads the heart’s pumping function. Heart failure and stroke are a usual consequence of chronically high blood viscosity.
