Concept introduction:

A carbonyl compound is reacted with enol or enolate to form a β-hydroxyaldehyde or β-hydroxyketone, followed by dehydration to give a conjugated enone is known as aldol condensation. Aldol reactions are not limited to just ketones and aldehydes. Other compounds that contain a polar π bond and have acidic α hydrogens also undergo a similar reaction. The final dehydration step in aldol condensation occurs via an SN1cb mechanism.
