The physiological effects of the thyroid hormones.
Introduction:
The thyroid hormones are released from the thyroid gland (that is located below the larynx) under the influence of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) secreted from the anterior pituitary gland. The thyroid hormones, for example, triiodothyronine and thyroxine (secreted from thyroid follicles), are lipid-soluble hormones and calcitonin (secreted from parafollicular cells) is a polypeptide hormone. As a result, they are involved directly in protein synthesis and gene transcription.
