Chapter 17, Problem 9TY
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

In order for a cell to divide, it undergoes a cycle known as the cell cycle. It consists of Interphase and Mitosis. Interphase has three subphases: G1, S, and G2. To make sure the processes in the cell cycle are going as expected, the cell has its own mechanisms to check this progress. These are called cell cycle checkpoints. If any abnormal events have occurred, they are corrected or the cell cycle is halted. There are three major checkpoints and they occur during the following phases: G1, G2, and metaphase of mitosis.

Sometimes a cells "deal with" damaged DNA by just killing off the cell. This special cellular suicide is called apoptosis. Usually, the cell cycle has checkpoints that prevent damaged/mutated cells from proceeding to the next phase, though. When these checkpoints don't work, apoptosis can be used. If apoptosis did NOT occur, how might the damaged DNA impact the rest of the cell cycle?   A. it may not complete the cell cycle correctly   B. new cells containing damaged DNA may be made   C. the cell may enter G0   D. all of the above are options   E. A and B, but not C   F. B and C, but not A
During what phase of the cell cycle is DNA synthesized?
(B) Diagram the four phases of the cell cycle. (2 pt.) (C) On the same diagram, indicate the main events that occur in each cell cycle phase. (3 pts.) (D) Name and describe the function of the four core cell cycle control complexes and indicate on the diagram above where they function in the cell cycle.
