Summary Introduction

To review:

Molecules that can bind to ncRNA (non-coding RNA)

Introduction:

The ncRNA stands for non- coding RNAs and has the ability to carry out various functions and affect processes like gene expression and translation of messenger RNA. The functions include acting as a scaffold, guide, alteration of protein structure, ribozyme, blocker, and decoy.

Explanation of Solution

ncRNA controls certain functions due to its proximity and binding ability to certain important molecules like DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid), RNA (Ribonucleic acid), proteins and small molecules. This binding is facilitated by multiple binding sites and complementary base pairing.

1. DNA: binding of ncRNAs to DNA is due to its strong affinity to DNA molecules due to complementary base pairing.

2. RNA: binding of ncRNAs is due to complementary base pairing of ncRNAs and messenger RNA molecules.

3. Proteins and small molecules:ncRNAs bind to proteins and other small molecules due to multiple binding sites and affect processes like transcription and translation.

The figure given below shows the binding of ncRNA to different molecules of DNA, RNA, proteins, and small molecules:

Conclusion

Therefore, it can be concluded that ncRNAs bind to different molecules like DNA, RNA, proteins and small molecules due to complementary base pairing and multiple binding sites on ncRNA molecule.

We will be starting a group project next week where you and your group will research and ultimately present on a current research article related to the biology of a pathogen that infects humans. The article could be about the pathogen itself, the disease process related to the pathogen, the immune response to the pathogen, vaccines or treatments that affect the pathogen, or other biology-related study about the pathogen. I recommend that you choose a pathogen that is currently interesting to researchers, so that you will be able to find plenty of articles about it. Avoid choosing a historical disease that no longer circulates. List 3 possible pathogens or diseases that you might want to do for your group project.
