Chapter 16.SE, Problem 26VC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

How the compound shown (p-aminobenzoic acid) can be synthesized from benzene is to be shown.

Concept introduction:

Benzene can be converted into alkyl benzenes by the Friedal-Crafts alkylation reaction. The alkyl group when nitrated directs the nitro group into ortho & para positions to yield nitroalkylbenzenes. The para isomer is favored as it is strain free. Oxidation of the alkyl group in the nitro alkyl benzene with KMnO4 will yield the acid required.

To show:

How the compound shown (p-aminobenzoic acid) can be synthesized from benzene

2) There are many forms of cancer, all of which involve abnormal cell growth. The growth and production of cells, called cell proliferation, is known to involve an enzyme called protein farnesyltransferase (PFTase). It is thought that inhibitors pf PFTase may be useful as anticancer drugs. The following molecule showed moderate activity as a potential PFTase inhibitor. Draw all stereoisomers of this compound. HO OH
