Summary Introduction

To describe: The known effects of progesterone on oocytes prior to the study conducted by Masui and Markert.

Introduction: Yoshio Masui and Clement Markert studied the effect of progesterone on frog oocytes. Oocytes are the cells that on maturity turn into egg cells. Prior to their studies, a group of researchers has already identified that frog oocytes turn dormant in the G2 phase of cell cycle. Progesterone is the hormone produced by female frogs during mating season.
