Concept explainers
To perform: The indicated operation on an algebraic expression and simplify.
The simplified expression for (x−1)3+3(x−1)2−3(x−1) is x3−1 .
Given data:
The given expression is (x−1)3+3(x−1)2−3(x−1) .
Method/Formula used:
A polynomial having two terms only is called a binomial. The expansions of a binomials (x+y)2 and (x+y)3 are,
(x−y)2=x2−2xy+y2 … (1)
(x3−y3)=(x−y)(x2+xy+y2) … (2)
Calculations:
The given expression is (x−1)3+3(x−1)2−3(x−1) . Write it as given below and simplify:
E(x)=(x−1) 3+3(x−1)2 −3(x−1) ←take(x−1) common factor =(x−1){(x−1)¯2+3(x−1) +3} ←use formulae (1)=(x−1){x2−2x+1+3x−3 +3} ←simplify =(x−1){x2−2x+3x+1} ←collect terms of like powers of x=(x−1)(x2+x+1) ←use formulae (2)=x3−13=x3−1
Therefore, the simplified expression for (x−1)3+3(x−1)2−3(x−1) is x3−1 .
