The functions f(x) and g(x) are; f(x)=x2+4 and g(x)=√x+1 . The required functions are fοg(3) and gοf(−2) .
Method/Formula used:
The composition function of two functions f(x) and g(x) is denoted by (f ο g)(x) is also a function defined by (f ο g)(x)=f(g(x)) . Similarly, (g ο f)(x)=g(f(x))
Calculations:
The given functions f(x) and g(x) are f(x)=x2+4 and g(x)=√x+1 . Then by the definition of fοg(x) ,
fοg(x)=f(g(x)) ←use definition of g(x), i.e., rereplace g(x)by√x+1=f(√x+1) ←use definition of f(x),replace x by√x+1 in f(x)=x2+4=(√x+1)2+4=x+1+4=x+5
Now, substitute 3 for x in fοg(x)=x+5
fοg(3)=3+5=8
Further, by the definition of gοf(x)
gοf(x)=g(f(x)) ←use definition of f(x), rereplace f(x)by f(x)=x2+4=g( x2+4) ←use definition of g(x),replace x by( x2+4)in g(x)=√x+1=√(x2+4)+1=√x2+5
Now, substitute -2 for x , gοf(x)=√x2+5 ,
gοf(−2)=√(−2)2+5=√9=3
Therefore, fοg(3)=8 and gοf(−2)=3 .
