Chapter 16, Problem 73E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

A paragraph is to be written about genetically modified foods refer an FDA-published question-answer forum on genetically engineered plants at given website.

Concept Introduction:

Plants and animals can be genetically modified through genetic engineering. The DNA from one organism is transferred to another organism producing a recombinant DNA. By carefully choosing the kind of DNA that is introduced, the characteristics of the organism can be engineered.

Which of the following statements is true about soybean oil? Select one: a. Soybean oil is rich in polyunstaruated fatty acids such as linoleic acid and a-linoleic acid. These two fatty acids are essential to human health and play a critical role in human development b. Synthetic antioxidant compounds such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are used to increase the stability of mono- unstaurated fatty acids in soybean oil and delay oxidation c. Soybean oil is a known anti inflammatory as it is primarily composed of high levels of oleic mono- unsaturated fatty acids d. Soybean oil is unstable and prone to lipid oxidation so is unfit for human consumption and is only used in manufacturing
For each of these images, identify what type of macromolecule is shown. These are your choices, some may be used more than once. Monosaccharide, disaccharide, polysaccharide, amino acid (and if an amino acid, name it from your text book or the ppt.), triglyceride, and fatty acid, also circle where there is unsaturation.
You ask the individual if they are taking any non-prescription drugs.  They tell you they recently started taking a coenzyme Q10 supplement based on a recommendation from a friend.  The structure of coenzyme Q10 is shown below.  Looking at the structure of the molecule, which one of the 4 major classes of macromolecules (carbohydrate, lipid, proteins or nucleotides) does it most closely resemble?  Be sure to include specific chemical characteristics that support this decision.
