Concept explainers
To find: the information required to find the number of cartons of milk served.
Explanation of Solution
Given Information: A cafeteria served a total of 660 cartons of three drinks (together) on a particular day. The drinks included milk, apple juice and fruit punch. The quantity of apple juice was twice that of the milk and the quantity of fruit punch was three times the quantity of milk. The quantity of drinks served during that day was 100 less than 80% of the usual quantity served.
In the given situation, the number of milk cartons served is unknown and two vital information is needed to find the quantity of milk.
(1) Total number of cartons of drinks served.
(2) Quantity of other drinks which are apple juice and fruit punch are a function of quantity of milk. Here, the apple is served as twice the quantity of milk and fruit punch is thrice that of milk. This helps to express the total quantity in (1) in terms of the quantity of milk alone so that an equation with one unknown is obtained and solved to find the number of cartons of milk.
The other information given on the quantity served in usual days are redundant information and not necessary here.
