Concept explainers
To review:
The term hematocrit and its normal value.
Introduction:
Blood is the fluid tissue present in the body of the vertebrates. It is homogenous and thick and has cellular components. It is a type of connective tissue and the cells present in it are known as formed elements. The cells are suspended in plasma, which is a nonliving fluid matrix.
Explanation of Solution
There are several types of cells that are suspended in the plasma, which makes up the blood. RBCs (red blood cells), platelets, and WBCs (white blood cells) are some of the major types of cells in the blood. The components of the blood can be easily separated using the centrifuge.
The total volume of blood constituted by erythrocytes or red blood cells is known as haematocrit. In another words, it can be defined as the volume percentage of erythrocytes in the blood. The normal value of haematocrit in males is 47%±5% and the normal value of haematocrit in females is 42%±5%.
Therefore, it can be concluded that the hematocrit is the total percentage of RBCs in the blood. The normal value of hematocrit in males is 47%±5% and in females is 42%±5%.
