Concept explainers
In a large microelectronics plant, the assembly cell for circuit boards has a demand for 200 units an hour. Two feeder cells supply parts A and B (o the assembly cell (one A and one B for each board). Standard containers that look like divided trays are used. A container will hold 20 As or 10 Bs. It takes 10 minutes to fill up a container with As and 20 minutes to fill up a container with Bs. Transit time to the assembly cell is 5 minutes for both A and B. No safety factor is used. Set up a kanban

- Jitsmart is a retailer of plastic action-figure toys. The action figures are purchased from Tacky Toys, Inc., and arrive in boxes of 20. Full boxes are stored on high shelves out of reach of customers. A small inventory is maintained on child-level shelves. Depletion of the lower-shelf inventory signals the need to take down a box of action figures to replenish the inventory. A reorder card is then removed from the box and sent to Tacky Toys to authorize replenishment of a container of action figures. The average demand rate for a popular action figure, Agent 99, is 18 units per day. The total lead time (waiting plus processing) is 2 days. Jitsmart's safety stocky policy variable, a, is 0.05. What is the authorized stock level for Jitsmart? units. (Enter your response rounded to the nearest whole number.)arrow_forwardA fabrication cell at Spradley's Sprockets uses the pull method to supply gears to an assembly line. George Jitson is in charge of the assembly line, which requires 394 gears per day. Containers typically wait 0.5 day in the fabrication cell. Each container holds 45 gears, and one container requires 0.9 day in machine time. Setup times are negligible. If the policy variable for unforeseen contingencies is set at 0.03, how many containers should Jitson authorize for the gear replenishment system? Jitson should authorize containers. - Carol Cagle bas a repetitive manufacturing plantproducing trailer bitches in Arlington, Texas. The plant has anaverage inventory tu rnover of only 12 times per year. She hastherefore determined that she will reduce her component lotsizes. She has developed the following data for one component, the safety chain clip:Annual demand = 31,200 unitsDaily demand = 120 unitsDaily production (in 8 hours) = 960 unitsDesired lot size (I hour of production) = 120 unitsHolding cost per unit per year = $12Setup labor cost per hour = $20How many minutes of setup time should she have her plant manageraim for regarding this component?arrow_forwardA production cell at Canderberry Candle facility operates5 hours per day and uses a pull method to supply wicks to theassembly line. Th e wicks are used at a rate of 300 per day. Eachcontainer holds 20 wicks and usually waits 20 minutes in theproduction cell. Management wants a safety stock of 10 percent. How many containers should be used at the Canderberry Candlefacility for purposes of pull production?arrow_forwardCarol Cagle has a repetitive manufacturing plant producing trailer hitches in Arlington, Texas. The plant has an average inventory turnover of only 12 times per year. He has therefore determined that he will reduce his component lot sizes. He has developed the following data for one component, the safety chain clip: Setup labor cost $25 per hour Annual holding cost $12 per unit Daily production 960 units/8 hour day Annual demand 45,360 (270 days each×daily demand of 168 units) Desired lot size 120 units (one hour of production) Part 2 To obtain the desired lot size, the set-up time that should be achieved = enter your response here minutes (round your response to two decimal places).arrow_forward

The linehaul cost for an average shipment is $600, and the truck carries 2000 pounds offeathers. A bright new graduate has just been hired and has suggested that theyshould bale the feathers into 500-pound bales. This would make them easier tohandle and also allow them to be compressed into about one-tenth of the space theynow occupy. How many pounds of feathers can the truck now carry? What is thepresent line haul cost per pound? What will it be if the proposal is adopted?arrow_forwardCarol Cagle has a repetitive manufacturing plant producing trailer hitches in Arlington, Texas.
