Chapter 15, Problem 15.28P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The pH of the unknown +50.0mV and slope of the calibration curve (mV/pHunit) and the theoretical slope at 200C and the value of β has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Calibrating a glass electrode:

When u calibrate an electrode with standard buffers, to calculate the voltage with each buffer. The pH of buffer S1 is pHS1 and measured electrode potential in that buffer is ES1 .

The pH of buffer S2 is pHS2 and measured electrode potential in that buffer is ES2 .

E-ES1pH-pHS1=ES2-ES1pHS2-pHS1

The slope of the line is

ΔEΔpH=ES2-ES1pHS2-pHS1

Theoretical slope= RTln10F

β=observedslopetheoreticalslope

Draw and show the full mechanism of how the molecule ((1E, 3E, 5E)-1-methoxyhepta-1,3,5-triene) is built using substitution and elimination reactions. You can start with an alkane of any carbon length with any number of leaving groups attached or with a alkoxide of any carbon length (conjugate base of an alcohol). Show each step and and explanation for each reaction. Also include why the reagents and solvents were picked and what other products can be expected.
