Chapter 14.S, Problem 4Q
Summary Introduction
To identify: What if the objective function is the same as one of the slopes of constraint in linear programming graphically.
Linear programming is a quantitative technique in mathematical approach to determine the operational level activity to achieve an objective function by providing an optimal solution i.e. to maximize the profit, or to minimize the total which is restricted to constraints. The term linear represents the relationship between the objective function and constraints.

Mark Sumansky owns and manages the Grass, Unlimited, Lawn-care service in Middleton. His customers include individual homeowners and businesses that subscribe to his service for lawn care beginning in the spring and ending in the fall with leaf raking and disposal. Thus, when he begins his service in April he generally has a full list of customers and does not take on additional customers any time after the first of June, it is difficult to find new customers, since most people make lawn service arrangements forth the entire summer.
Mark employs five crews, with three to five workers each, to cut grass during the spring and summer months. A crew normally works 10-hour days and can average cutting about 25 normal-size lawns of less than a half-acre each day. A crew will normally have one heavy-duty, wide-cut riding mower, a regular power mower, and trimming equipment. When a crew descends on a lawn, the normal procedure is for one person to mow the main part of the lawn with the riding…

- Seas Beginning sells clothing by mail order. An important question is when to strike a customer from the companys mailing list. At present, the company strikes a customer from its mailing list if a customer fails to order from six consecutive catalogs. The company wants to know whether striking a customer from its list after a customer fails to order from four consecutive catalogs results in a higher profit per customer. The following data are available: If a customer placed an order the last time she received a catalog, then there is a 20% chance she will order from the next catalog. If a customer last placed an order one catalog ago, there is a 16% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order two catalogs ago, there is a 12% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order three catalogs ago, there is an 8% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order four catalogs ago, there is a 4% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order five catalogs ago, there is a 2% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. It costs 2 to send a catalog, and the average profit per order is 30. Assume a customer has just placed an order. To maximize expected profit per customer, would Seas Beginning make more money canceling such a customer after six nonorders or four nonorders?arrow_forwardA mining company owns two mines, each of which produces three grades (high, medium, and low) of ore. A certain Repair Shop with only the owner doing the repair job would like to earn P3,000.00 for two days. On the average, he charges P500 per piece for the repair of one unit of laptop and P200 for the repair of each unit of one cellphone. He works for 8 hours a day. He spends on the average 2 hours to repair a unit of laptop and 1.5 hours to repair a cellphone. Using linear programming, determine how many units of laptops and how units of cellphone he must repair for two days in order for him to earn exactly P3,000.00 for two days. You may use linear equations and/or inequalities to arrive at the answers. Check the consistency of your answers.arrow_forward
- RVW (Restored Volkswagens) buys 15 used VW's at each of two car auctions each week held at different locations. It then transports the cars to repair shops it contracts with. When they are restored to RVW's specifications, RVW sells 10 to each of three different used car lots. There are various costs associated with the average purchase and transportation prices from each auction to each repair shop. Also there are costs associated with average repair expenses and transportation costs from the repair shops to the used car lots. RVW is concerned with minimizing its total cost.
