Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The term matches with the definition or description have to be chosen.
Concept Introduction:
Crystalline solids are solid compounds with highly ordered structure of the constituents (atoms, molecules or ions). Depending on the constituents (atoms, molecules or ions), the crystalline solids are classified in three types-
- Ionic solids
- Molecular solids
- Atomic solids
Answer to Problem 52A
l) Molecular solids
Molecular solids that melt at relatively low temperatures.
Explanation of Solution
The low melting point of molecular solids can be explained by considering intermolecular attractive forces which held the constituents together inside the solids. Intermolecular attractive force in molecular solids are van der Waals forces and London dispersion forces between the molecules. The molecules in a molecular solid are held together by weaker Van der Waals forces. To melt the molecular solids, low temperature is required to break weaker Van der Waals forces between the molecules.
