Separate the wave equation in spherical coordinates, and show that the $\theta ,\varphi$ solutions are the spherical harmonics $Y_l^m(\theta ,\varphi )=P_l^m(\cos \theta )e^{\pm im\varphi }$ and the $r$ solutions are the spherical Bessel functions .
