To determine: The meaning of barrel chest.
Introduction: A group of common chronic respiratory disorders that is characterized by progressive tissue degeneration and blockage in the airways of the lungs are known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These chronic disorders are emphysema, chronic asthma, and chronic bronchitis. In some cases, the cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis may lead to the blockage of airways. COPD causes progressive and permanent impairment to the lungs.
To explain: The reason why barrel chest develops in individuals with emphysema.
Introduction: The progressive lung disease that initially causes the shortness of breath due to the alveolar over-inflation is known as the emphysema. The vital change in the emphysema is the destruction of pulmonary alveolar walls and septae. This leads to large permanently inflated alveolar air spaces.
