Concept explainers
To determine:
The reflex that occurred when a weight lifter, who is straining to lift the weight above his head, brings the barbell to his chests, and then drops it because the muscles of his arm relaxed.
Introduction:
Reflex is the term given to instantaneous and automated response to a particular stimulus. This kind of stimulation causes the utilization of the reflex arc. Reflex arc is the path followed by the signals which are induced by specific stimulation. There are two different types of reflexes namely monosynaptic reflex that includes the postural reflex and stretch reflex, and the polysynaptic reflex that includes tendon reflex, withdrawal reflex, crossed extensor reflex.

- Why must the withdrawal reflex, but not the stretch reflex, involve a polysynaptic reflex arc?arrow_forwardWhy is response time in a monosynaptic reflex much faster than response time in a polysynaptic reflex?arrow_forwardDo you think the patellar reflex would be inhibited or enhanced by actively contracting the quadriceps muscle group? With an understanding of how muscle spindle fibers work, explain how active contraction of a muscle might affect the myotactic reflex. [hint: try to elicit a knee jerk reflex when someone is doing a leg lift]arrow_forward
- Using a reflex hammer, which of the following reflexes are assessed to determine the patient's neurologic condition? I. Patellar reflex and Babinski reflex II. Achilles tendon reflex and Triceps reflex III. Brachial reflex and Pupillary reflex IV. Plantar reflex and Pharyngeal reflexarrow_forwardWhen a physician elicits the patellar reflex, what physiological activities are being examined? List four. (Hint: think of the function of each component of the reflex pathway).arrow_forwardWhich of the following is true of cross-extensor reflexes? in the leg that sensed the pain, the flexor relaxes in the leg that sensed the pain, the extensor contracts in the opposite leg, the extensor is activated in the opposite leg the flexor is activatedarrow_forward
- The reflex times for the Achilles Tendon Reflex and the Patellar Tendon Reflex should be different? Why?arrow_forwardWhen describing the reflex arcs and the neural pathways involved we often limit ourselves to the nerves carrying information from the muscle or tendon to the spinal cord and back. However, it should be clear from our ability to feel the tendon tap as well as the results from the Jendrassik’s maneuver test that it isn’t this simple. What other neural connections must be present ?arrow_forwardList the components of reflex arc in correct sequence?arrow_forward
- What are the components of a reflex arc and what is the difference between a somatic motor reflex and a visceral reflex arc?arrow_forwardImproper use of crutches can produce a condition known as crutch paralysis, which is characterized by a lack of response by the extensor muscles of the arm and a condition known as wrist drop. Which nerve is involved?arrow_forwardWhat are the components in a polysynaptic reflex arc in the order that they are activated. Then briefly describe the function of each. #1 #2 #3 #4 #5arrow_forward
