Concept explainers
A Visit to Santa. You decide to visit Santa Claus at the north pole to put in a good word about your splendid behavior throughout the year. While there, you notice that the elf Sneezy, when hanging from a rope, produces a tension of 395.0 N in the rope. If Sneezy hangs from a similar rope while delivering presents at the earth’s equator, what will the tension in it be? (Recall that the earth is rotating about an axis through its north and south poles.) Consult Appendix F and start with a free-body diagram of Sneezy at the equator.

- In the figure below, a spider is resting after starting to spin its web. The gravitational force on the spider is 0.170 N on the junction of the three strands of silk. The junction is supported by different tension forces in the two strands above it so that the resultant force on the junction is zero. The two sloping strands are perpendicular, and we have chosen the x and y directions to be along them. The tension T, is 0.111 N. Also, assume that if your mass is m, then the earth exerts a gravitational force on you of magnitude mg, where g = 9.8 m/s2 at all points of the earth's surface. a) Your mass is m = will the scale read? (Thanks to the Third Law, this is the same as asking for the normal force exerted on you by the scale.) b) Next you go to the Equator and stand on a scale. What does it read? The radius of the earth is 6.4 × 106 m. c) Suppose the earth were rotating so quickly that objects became “weightless" at the equator. How long would the day be? 50 kg. - The tallest spot on Earth is Mt. Everest, which is 8850 m above sea level. If the radius of Earth to sea level is 6359 km, how much does the gravitational field strength change between the sea level value at that location (9.826 N/kg) and the top of Mt. Everest?arrow_forwardA spider hangs from the junction formed by three strands of silk, as shown in the figure. The force of tension in each strand pulls at the junction. The net force at the junction is zero. In other words, the resultant of all three force vectors is zero at the junction. The gravitational force on the spider makes it exert a downward force of 0.15 N on the junction. The two sloping strands are perpendicular to each other. We have chosen the x and y axes to be along those strands as shown. The force of the right strand on the junction has magnitude Tx force of the left strand on the junction has unknown magnitude T,y. a) Calculate Ty. b) Calculate the angle between the x axis and the horizontal direction. Hint: The SI unit of force is the newton, which is abbreviated as N. You must consider three force vectors. The x components of all three vectors must add to zero, and the y components must also add to zero. Note that the coordinate system is "rotated" which is Tx Ty 0.127 Ν. We will do this by finding the gravitational field g due to the Moon or the Sun, which is the acceleration that the Earth would have if it were interacting with each of them. For reference, the Moon has a mass of 7.34 × 1022 kilograms and is located 3.84 × 105 kilometers away from the Earth. The Sun, meanwhile, has a mass of 1.99 × 1030 kilograms and is located 1.49 × 108 kilometers away from the Earth. The boat's owner loves high speed, but does not really want to go anywhere. So the owner revs up the boat's engine, makes a lot of noise, and runs the boat in circles around the buoy with the cable supplying all the necessary centripetal force. When the tension of the cable is steady at 12300 N, with what force is the boat's engine pushing the boat? Different physics textbooks treat drag force somewhat differently and use different formulas. For the present purpose, take the water's drag force on the boat to be (450 kg/m) × v², where v denotes the boat's speed.
