Concept introduction: A neuron is the basic functional unit of the nervous system and is the specialized cell of the nervous system that makes a complex network for the transmission of synapse. It is a microscopic individual cell that has the ability to respond to a stimulus and converts it into an action potential. The unequal distribution of positive and negative charges across the cell membrane results in membrane potential of a cell. When the membrane potential of an axon in a specific location rises and falls, it causes a series of electrical response or action potential. Action potential helps in the communication between cells.
