Concept introduction: Postsynaptic potentials are graded potentials that occur in postsynaptic neurons. It is the temporary change in the electrical polarization of the membrane of a neuron. When the neuron is hyperpolarized, postsynaptic potentials are called IPSPs. The binding of neurotransmitter to the receptors on the postsynaptic membrane changes the permeability and membrane potential of the postsynaptic neuron. This results in a difference in the electrical charge between the inside and outside of the membrane. The action potential is generated after the establishment of membrane potential, and the nerve impulse flows throughout the neuron.
