The IUPAC name of the given alkane has to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Alkanes are hydrocarbon that has only single bond.

On naming the alkanes,

• The longest continuous carbon should be numbered, so that the main chain can be identified.
• Number the main chain beginning at the end nearer to the first branch.
• Identify and number the substituents.
• Write the name as one word.

Carbon can be classified into four types; they are primary (has one other carbon attached), secondary (has two other carbon attached), tertiary (has three other carbon attached) and quaternary (four other carbon attached.)
