Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Amoebas are unicellular eukaryotic organisms. The size (µm-cm) and food sources of amoeba vary (detritivores and predators). These amoeboid cells have extensions called pseudopodia meant for locomotion. These cells are found in protozoa, fungi, algae, and in animals. Amoebas can change their shapes due to contraction and retraction of their locomotory organs. Movement of pseudopodia is coordinated through the action of actin and microfilaments. It is not only involved in movement but also in feeding (phagocytosis and pinocytosis).
